Don Whitley Scientific Microbiologists

Our wonderful team of microbiologists operate within our purpose-built laboratories. We have the skills and equipment to culture diverse aerobic, anaerobic and microaerophilic bacteria, and specialise in cultivating fastidious organisms such as Mycoplasma and Brachyspira species, and conducting antimicrobial susceptibility tests with these organisms.

Today we celebrate our nearly completely female team of microbiologists by sharing a little about two of the youngest members.

Charlotte Austin joined us in 2018 with a BSc in Biomedical Science from the University of Chester. When we asked about Charlotte’s motivation to join the scientific community her reply was linked to a memory that has stayed with her all this time. “A memory that has remained with me is the first time I looked down a microscope and saw a eukaryotic cell; I knew from that moment I wanted to be a scientist!”. The best part of working at DWS for Charlotte is the practical element of working in a laboratory and the variety of studies that she can undertake on behalf on clients.

Kirsty McTear joined DWS in 2021 after completing a BSc in Biomedical Science from The University of Huddersfield. For Kirsty the best part of working as a microbiologist at DWS is the satisfaction she feels after successfully growing a particularly stubborn microorganism. Her inspiration to join the field of microbiology came from learning in 6th form about how the body is affected by disease-causing microorganisms.
